Web Indexing
Web indexes are lists of hyperlinks that guide people to points within your website, your web document or other websites if interest. These can be alphabetical lists of people, places, subjects, etc.
Web indexes can look just like back-of-book indexes but, instead of page numbers, the index term itself is hyperlinked to the html reference point (URL, bookmarks, prepared searches, etc.) See and See also may be used, or the user may be automatically directed to alternatives.
The index will often be one level, but there may be sub-entries when the subject matter is complex and there are multiple references for each subject or concept.
As indexes are usually long, it can be broken into sections and interspersed with navigation bookmarks. This enables the user to be directly transported to the selected letter and then quickly move back to an alphabet menu when complete.
Automatically generated indexes based on content keywords are common but lack human analysis and the use of synonyms and cross-referencing. Analysis of search engine statistics on failed queries and popular terms can be used to customize the index to variations in your users’ vocabularies.
Black Cat Indexing can provide your website with a user-friendly A to Z index with the style and comprehensiveness of a back-of-book index.
